In March 2017, the German Federal Ministry for Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) declared DFS to be the body that holds geodata for the Federal Government for air transport networks.

Under Section 3(8) and Section 4(3) of the German Geodata Access Law (GeoZG), as the national implementation of the INSPIRE Directive 2007/2/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, DFS is therefore, with immediate effect, to be considered an information-providing body for the publication of geodata under Section 2(1)(2) of the German Environmental Information Act (UIG).

In accordance with the Directive, DFS publishes air transport network data which fall within its area of responsibility.
