Night-time flight inspection at Berlin Tegel Airport

Calibration flights are planned to be conducted at Berlin Tegel Airport between 2300 hrs and 0300 hrs in the night from 29 to 3 November 2019

28.11.2019.- With this measure, DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung will calibrate the instrument landing system (ILS). The ILS enables pilots to land safely even in bad weather conditions with very poor visibility. The accuracy of the transmitted signals must be checked by means of regular calibrations. In many ways, such flight inspections are similar to the roadworthiness tests private cars have to go through in many jurisdictions every few years. Just like with cars, without such regular inspections, air navigation services facilities can have their technical approval withdrawn.

Despite the night curfew at Berlin Tegel Airport, technical flight checks are permitted at night. Due to the current high traffic volume at Berlin Tegel Airport, it is necessary to conduct the flight inspection at night. The upcoming calibration is for the ILS facility of the northern runway (26R for approaches from the east).

A twin-turboprop Beechcraft King Air 350 will be used as the calibration aircraft. If the calibration cannot be conducted during this night because of the weather, it will be postponed by one week.

Calibration flights are indispensable for the safety of air traffic. DFS would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by such flights.
