Our conception of R&D

Our motto is: Experience tomorrow’s air traffic management today.

In keeping with this motto, R&D at DFS sees itself as a bridge between research activities and real-world applications. Our main objective is to advance DFS and the entire air transport system at a national and international level and identify and promote the right issues in the company. Supporting other DFS divisions and departments in transferring innovations into operation is also part of our job. Innovations cover concepts and ideas, procedures, technological developments and optimisations of the human-machine system of air traffic control. The transfer from research to operational use is one of our most important outcomes.

Our work is consistent with the objectives of the European strategy paper „Flightpath 2050“ and the strategic roadmap „Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda“ (SRIA). We are networked with the leading ATM research institutions and standardisation bodies through national and international projects and mainly focus on new concepts, procedures or systems as well as ATM simulators and simulations and innovation management.

We operate an iterative phase model, which means that after each phase there is a critical review and assessment of the results with the potential users. This early assessment reduces the risks associated with the introduction of systems and procedures and contributes to their quantitative and qualitative optimisation and thus to a high-performance air traffic management system.

Our portfolio is rounded off by product developments and services with strong synergies with R&D activities, especially the development of simulators and the conduct of simulations.
