Thanks to many years of experience in the validation of research and development projects, the R&D department at DFS has acquired broad-based interdisciplinary expertise. Advising and supporting DFS as well as external customers has thus become a key point. This structural anchoring ensures that the latest results from research flow into the simulation-aided testing of innovative air traffic management systems, airspace structures and operational procedures and their optimisation. This makes a significant contribution to the increase in efficiency in air traffic management (ATM).
ATM simulations can be used in many different ways — in the evaluation of new airspaces, airports, systems and procedures as well as the training of air traffic controllers and the intensive study of research issues. Based on the issue being researched, fast-time and real-time simulations are used, bringing with them their own particular strengths.
