Functional airspace blocks

Reorganising European airspace into functional airspace blocks (FAB) is the cornerstone of the European Commission's SES programme.

A FAB is a segment of airspace extending over several countries, whereby the States maintain their national sovereignty. The boundaries of such an airspace block will no longer be organised according to national borders – as is the case today – but according to main traffic flows. Technology and flight procedures will also be adapted accordingly. The goal is to continue to handle air traffic in the future in a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly manner whilst, at the same time, cutting costs.
