Safe drone flights with the DFS drone app

Since the end of July, the DFS drone app has been available free of charge from the App Store (iOs) and Google Play. The app provides users with information on the rules and regulations that have to be obeyed when using drones in Germany.

The idea behind this German-language app is to make owners of small and toy drones aware of the potential hazards that stem from using such devices. To use the app, location services have to be activated on the user's smartphone/tablet and the user needs to register. The app is easy to use and answers the question "Where am I allowed to fly?" Interactive charts from official sources and DFS itself show the rules that have to be obeyed for every location in Germany. The app provides information on areas and facilities that cannot be overflown, or only with restrictions (such as airports, hospitals, industrial and energy facilities and nature reserves). A logbook function in the app records the flights already made.

The new German Aviation Regulation (Luftverkehrsordnung) issued by the Federal Ministry of Transport provides the legal basis for the app.

We would welcome feedback on the app at drohnenapp@dfs.de.
