GPS/FMS overlay procedures
A few years ago, DFS began publishing GPS/FMS overlay procedures for almost all of the international airports in Germany and at a great number of regional airports in order to improve navigation accuracy on arrival and departure routes (GPS=Global Positioning System; FMS=Flight Management System). Programming of aircraft equipped with satellite-based systems can be improved by inputting precise waypoints on the basis of geographical coordinates, distances and exact headings. After the introduction of these procedures, compliance with approach procedures improved significantly.

GPS stand-alone approach procedures
At some airports, GPS stand-alone procedures were established. These are independent GPS approach procedures which are not dependent on ground-based navigation aids. They enable aerodromes to offer better services to their customers even if they cannot afford cost- and maintenance-intensive navigation aids. They are an additional option for airports already equipped with ground-based navigation aids.
