R&D: Valuable results for the future
Research is pioneering work. Even with clearly defined objectives, the results are almost unpredictable. In the aviation industry, DFS uses its fast-time simulations to support the development of new technologies, methods and procedures. In close cooperation with the Aachen University of Technology, the results of DFS fast-time simulations have contributed to many international studies. The software used for this has also been developed to a level which far exceeds the market standards. The benefits of the DFS fast-time simulation are particularly evident in the area of research and development. This tool can realistically simulate the movements of each individual aircraft during all phases of a flight, starting from the point where it taxis out of the hangar or from the apron until it reaches the gate at the destination airport. In spite of the high level of complexity, the DFS fast-time simulation is also capable of analysing large traffic volumes in detail in a very short time. As part of the ONESKY project, for example, it was used to examine a scenario with as many as 30,000 aircraft movements. Within the framework of the European gate-to-gate projects, the DFS fast-time simulation team was faced with a completely different problem. No workload models were available for the so-called multi-sector planner which, in future, will support several radar controllers. It was also unclear how many sectors could be handled by one multi-sector planner. Since this was a completely new work model, it was also necessary to create a suitable scenario for the costly and time-consuming real-time simulation. Within only a few months, the results of the simulation were available in the form of an optimal sector structure. To this end, the DFS fast-time simulation examined 32 scenarios based on the real sector structure in the south German airspace, using traffic samples from the years 2002 and 2010. It was subsequently possible to validate this optimised sector structure with the aid of a real-time simulation. Our R&D simulations offer you results:
- For studies of regional, national and international airspaces
- For the introduction of new operating philosophies such as free flight or functional airspace blocks
- For the analysis and forecasting of traffic flows from gate to gate
- For the analysis and definition of the distribution of tasks between the available controllers
