Airlines: Optimal utilisation of hubs
The success of the hub-and-spoke strategy is undisputed in the aviation sector, and this is true for both passenger and cargo operations. However, the concentration of traffic at one or more central hubs can also have its drawbacks. Where turnaround times become shorter and shorter and the number of aircraft on the ground increases, problems are going to arise. With the aid of a DFS fast-time simulation, you can recognise these problems in good time and plan the flights optimally. The ability of the DFS fast-time simulation to observe each aircraft from gate to gate permits airlines to simulate their entire route networks, together with their mutual interdependencies. In addition, the accuracy of this tool offers the chance to plan each individual taxi movement and each individual parking position on the apron without losing the general overview. The software takes into account the taxi times and the speeds of the different aircraft types as well as local approach procedures. In the restricted space of the apron, it makes it possible to avoid delays which could occur from crossing ground traffic or occupied gates. Congestions at peak times, for example on the way to the runway, can be prevented by taking the flight schedule into account and by using an intelligent runway management system. The airline benefits from this in two ways: The integrated observation of all flights on the flight schedule is combined with the optimisation of the central hub – an aspect which is highly welcomed by our customers, the airlines. For the simulation team, it is immaterial whether a hub structure already exists or a decision is to be made on the location for a new hub. The parameters and criteria of the simulation are so flexible that it is even possible to make a location decision on the basis of the results of the DFS fast-time simulation. By means of the various airport layouts and differing traffic scenarios, it is possible to examine the suitability of individual locations for their future use as the hub for an airline. Our simulations help you to:
- Plan your hub-and-spoke structure
- Improve your management of the gates and parking positions
- Provide better runway management in peak periods
- Plan new hubs on the drawing board
