A new cross-border airspace structure in Europe – which airlines have been demanding for years – could soon become a reality. Within the framework of the Single European Sky initiative, the European Commission have been calling for the creation of so-called functional airspace blocks (FAB) in order to respond to the challenges posed by the growing air traffic volume in Europe. These airspace blocks should be organised according to traffic flows rather than national borders, as is the case today in most parts of Europe.
