Safety
There is still a high safety level in German airspace. Even though the number of aircraft movements has significantly increased over the past few decades, the number of aircraft proximities since 2003 has remained at a single-digit level. DFS maintained this high level of safety in 2009. The independent committee of experts known as APEG classified four aircraft proximities as category A (risk of collision) and three as category B (safety not assured). DFS was not responsible for any of these cases. It is worth remembering that the traffic level today is four times as high as that of the mid-1970s. In 1975, for example, the German air navigation services controlled 744,000 flights. In the same year, there were 210 aircraft proximities. Aircraft proximities are investigated and categorised by an independent committee of experts called the Aircraft Proximity Evaluation Group (APEG), which comprises representatives of airlines, general aviation, the German Air Force, German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accidents Investigation, German Cockpit Association and DFS. Category A: Risk of collision Category B: Safety not assured
