The 1990s

DFS emerges from a Federal authority
When Germany was reunified in 1990, the Federal Administration of Air Navigation Services also began performing civil air traffic control in the eastern German States, which had up until then been performed by Interflug.

On 16 October 1992, DFS succeeded the Federal Administration of Air Navigation Services. Before this large-scale corporatisation – the first of its kind in the transport history of Germany – could take place, it was necessary to amend the German Constitution. This paved the way for setting up a modern management team for the company. On 1 January 1993, this State-owned company took on the task of ensuring the safe, orderly and expeditious handling of air traffic.
Since 1994, DFS has been responsible for performing not only civil but also regional military air traffic control in peacetime.

Establishing Europe’s largest air traffic control centre
In 1999, the largest air traffic control centre today in Europe entered service in Langen, near Frankfurt. More than 200 air traffic controllers safely and efficiently handle all flights to, from and over Germany twenty-four hours a day. Engineers and technicians develop and operate the required infrastructure. Safety in German airspace is ensured through the use of state-of-the-art radar stations and navigation aids, innovative instrument landing systems and modern air traffic control procedures.
