Online display of air traffic expanded to include Basel
DFS improves range of information available
31 January 2012.- Arrivals and departures at Basel Airport can now also be observed on the DFS website. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is located in the corner of France that borders on Switzerland and Germany. Although the airport is on French territory, it has a special binational status which was established in a treaty between France and Switzerland. The display of flight tracks arriving at or departing from EuroAirport will be limited to those over German territory. The impetus for including the tracks from airports near Germany's borders comes from the local population who expressed an interest in these flights. DFS provides a program called STANLY_Track (Statistics and Analysis) on its website free of charge. STANLY_Track displays flight tracks and levels of aircraft in the vicinity of airports. Apart from the live air situation, which is displayed with a time lag of 15 minutes, users can also look at flight tracks from the previous 14 days. By providing the STANLY_Track service, DFS strives to create more transparency, particularly with regard to aircraft noise complaints. Only aircraft at EuroAirport that fly according to instrument flight rules within German territory will be displayed. Flights under visual flight rule are not displayed. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, the German air navigation service provider, is a State-owned company under private law and has 6,000 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual flow of air traffic over Germany. Staff coordinate up to 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and about three million movements every year. This makes Germany the country with the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports. DFS provides training and consultancy services around the world and develops and sells air traffic management systems. The company's portfolio also comprises flight-relevant data, aeronautical publications and aeronautical information services. DFS has the following business units: Control Centre, Tower, Aeronautical Solutions and Aeronautical Information Management.
