Restrictions for instrument flights in lower and upper airspace Take-offs and landings under VFR also possible at night
19/04/2010.- Due to the current development of the volcanic ash cloud, lower airspace in Germany is expected to remain closed for instrument flights until Tuesday, 14:00 hrs local time. This also applies to upper airspace in northern Germany which is expected to be closed until Tuesday, 08:00 hrs local time. Take-offs and landings under visual flight rules (VFR) are also possible at night, provided that weather permits and that no night curfews are in place. The ash cloud emanating from a volcanic eruption in Iceland has spread over German airspace. Based on the current meteorological data, DFS cannot issue clearances for IFR flights in lower airspace (up to a level of six kilometres). According to the meteorological information available, this regulation is expected to apply until Tuesday, 14:00 hrs local time. In upper airspace (between six and twelve kilometres), a restriction applies in northern Germany with immediate effect. It is expected to remain in place until Tuesday, 08:00 hrs local time. Irrespective of this, take-offs and landings under VFR may still be conducted at German airports. This applies during the day and the night - provided that the applicable conditions are met. VFR take-offs and landings may be conducted if the visibility at the airport is good and if the statutory conditions are fulfilled; i.e. there is no night-time curfew at the airport. The arrangements of DFS are based on the current information of the German meteorological service DWD. It is continuously assessed whether the IFR restrictions must be extended or can be temporarily relaxed. DFS has activated its contingency management team, which is closely consulting with the experts of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS), the German Meteorological Service (DWD), the Federal Supervisory Authority for Air Navigation Services and EUROCONTROL. Due to the fact that the ash cloud is moving and the weather situation constantly changing, it is possible that the airspace at some airports can be opened up temporarily for IFR flights in the course of the day. DFS will facilitate such openings whenever possible. This gives airlines the chance to handle at least some flights during these timeframes.
