No take-offs or landings until Sunday, 20:00 hrs local time
Flight ban extended / VFR flights possible

18/4/2010.- Due to the ash cloud emanating from a volcanic eruption in Iceland, which has spread over the whole country, there will be no air traffic in Germany at least until Sunday, 20:00 hrs local time. All 16 international airports as well as all regional airports are affected by the closure.

The Federal Ministry of Transport has instructed DFS to reduce the number of flights handled to "zero" until further notice. The situation is continuously monitored in close cooperation with the German Meteorological Service (DWD). At the moment, it cannot be predicted how long the restrictions will be in place.

No flights under instrument flight rules (IFR) may be conducted in Germany, but flights under visual flight rules (VFR) are possible. The responsibility lies with the pilot. Several airlines conducted such VFR flights on the weekend in order to re-position aeroplanes from one airport to another, among them Lufthansa, Air Berlin and Condor. The transportation of passengers is not permitted. DFS expects that more of these ferry flights will be conducted. The airlines wish to bring their aeroplanes to the airports where they are needed most when the traffic restrictions are lifted.
