Work to build new Berlin tower underway

Commissioning planned for autumn 2011

Construction of the new DFS control tower at Berlin Brandenburg International Airport commenced today. This will give the future airport a new landmark. Reaching 72 metres, it will be the second largest tower in Germany.

From an architectural and technical point of view, the new tower will fit in with its surroundings and meet the requirements of the airport. The state-of-the-art elliptical tower cab with only four support elements accommodates eleven employees – "enough working positions to handle the growing traffic volume in the future," according to the DFS Managing Director, Ralph Riedle.

The tower was designed by the Stuttgart architect Franz Ondra and is the sixth tower to be owned by DFS and not rented from the airport operator. The other towers owned by DFS are Hannover, Leipzig, Dresden, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt. DFS is investing almost € 35 million in the building. The building shell is to be completed in November 2009 and construction by September 2010. Aerodrome control is to commence in the third quarter of 2011, in time for the opening of the capital city’s airport, in order to continue to handle air traffic safely and punctually in the future.
