Langen, 9 April 2009 DFS introduces new airspace structure
Expansion of Frankfurt Airport DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH has implemented a new airspace structure in the Hersfeld and Gedern area, a region in the north-east of the German State of Hesse. The restructuring project, known as HEFGED, constitutes the first change to the airspace in preparation for the new runway to be constructed at Frankfurt Airport. The goal is to be prepared for the rise in traffic that is expected after the airport expansion. Furthermore, DFS is investing in the construction of a new control tower and the expansion of highly sophisticated surveillance infrastructure using multilateration sensors with 40 measuring points around Frankfurt Airport. This system gives the air traffic controllers in Langen control centre an even more precise overview of arriving and departing traffic. New procedures and technical support tools are also being introduced. “Air traffic controllers handling inbound traffic flows to the new runway will be supported by a modern arrival management system (AMAN) in order to determine optimal arrival sequences to the new runway,” says Frank Brenner, Director of the DFS business unit Control Centre. The total investment will amount to approximately EUR 30 million up until the fourth runway enters into operation as planned in 2011. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung Gmb is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,350 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate up to 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than three million movements every year. With this large number of flights, Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports. DFS provides training and consultancy services around the world and develops and sells air traffic control, surveillance and navigation systems. The company's portfolio also comprises flight-relevant data, aeronautical publications and aeronautical information services. DFS has the following business units: Control Centre, Tower, Aeronautical Solutions and Aeronautical Information Management.
