Langen, 7 October 2009 DFS expands Mode S functionality
Flights to and from Amsterdam now included DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH has expanded the use of an important function of Mode S technology to some international flights. For the first time, it is possible to also use it outside German airspace. Instead of the conventional transponder code, pilots on routes between Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Amsterdam now receive the Mode S Conspicuity Code (MSCC) A1000, which is used to identify the aircraft. For flights within Germany, the MSCC route network now includes the connections Frankfurt-Düsseldorf and Düsseldorf-Munich. It was implemented on the first route between Frankfurt and Munich as early as on 2 March of this year. The continuous expansion of the use of this technology on the route network is an important step in tackling the seasonal and regional bottleneck that comes with assigning transponder codes across Europe. “In the near future, we plan to assign the MSCC to each aircraft that flies to one of the participating airports. In the foreseeable future, additional national and international routes will be introduced," says Frank Brenner, Director of the business unit Control Centre at DFS. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, the German air navigation service provider, is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,350 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate up to 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than 3 million movements every year. Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS staff work in the control towers of the 16 international airports in Germany, as well as at the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
