New ICAO charts for the start of the flying season

Springtime, the first rays of sunshine, clear blue skies, and excellent visibility! Just in time for the new flying season, the new official German Aeronautical Chart ICAO 1:500 000 will become effective on 13 March with many changes and innovations.

In addition to changes in airspace C, D, E and F, up-to-date topography and air navigation services information has been incorporated in the chart. It contains new roads and motorways, hundreds of changes to aerodromes and new obstacles, such as wind turbines, but also new lakes formed as a result of the decommissioning of old brown-coal mines in eastern Germany, which most maps do not yet show. The layout was also revised: Parachute dropping zones are now marked by a red symbol to make them more conspicuous.

The Aeronautical Chart ICAO 1:500 000 is the standard chart for powered flights under visual flight rules in Germany. It is also available as a glider edition. The charts are published by DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung.

At the same scale and with the same clear and concise layout, DFS will, in April, also publish the new aeronautical charts of the "Visual 500" series for Austria (also for glider flights), Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands. Then pilots will have the benefit of using charts that they are familiar with from Germany even when flying abroad.

The charts can be ordered over the Internet at www.dfs-aviationshop.de or from other distributors of aeronautical products.
