Langen, 8 January 2007 No strike at DFS for the time being
In the labour dispute with the air navigation services union (GdF), DFS Deutsche Flugischerung GmbH today called in the arbitrator. This prevents a strike in the coming weeks as air traffic controllers are obliged to keep the industrial peace. DFS had said that it would take this step if the GdF launched a strike despite the DFS offer of a 5.7 percent pay rise. DFS hopes that the arbitrator, the former federal minister of justice Herta Däubler-Gmelin, will restore objectivity in the negotiations, considering that the union has used every opportunity in the past days to twist the facts and make false accusations. DFS will keep its pledge to address the GdF demands for a proposal for a new salary structure before the arbitration begins. It is too early to tell how long the arbitration procedure will take. The arbitration agreement between DFS and the GdF solely states that the arbitrator will set the first date for negotiations within the first week and that – two weeks after the first arbitration negotiations – she will set a date for the announcement of her ruling. It may take several weeks before a decision is reached. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,200 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate around 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than three million movements every year. With this large number of flights, Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports. DFS provides training and consultancy services around the world and develops and sells air traffic control, surveillance and navigation systems. The company's portfolio also comprises flight-relevant data, aeronautical publications and aeronautical information services. DFS has the following business units: Control Centre, Tower, Aeronautical Solutions and Aeronautical Information Management.
