New VFR transponder code 7000

Pilots asked to avoid emergency codes
DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is asking all VFR pilots to avoid switching to any of the three emergency codes by mistake when selecting the new VFR transponder code. When the codes 7700 (emergency), 7600 (radio communication failure) or 7500 (hijacking) are selected – even if only briefly – this will trigger an alarm on the controller's radar screen. Staff in the control centres need a lot of time and effort to follow up on the alarm. It is not possible for controllers to know straight away whether they are dealing with a false alarm. For this reason, DFS is asking pilots to exercise care when switching to code 7000 and, if necessary, change to stand-by mode before resetting the transponder.

The new VFR code 7000 was introduced in Germany on 15 March. Frank Brenner, Director Operations of the business unit Control Centre, commented that the code 7000, which replaced codes 0021 and 0022, was well received by pilots in Germany. DFS received positive feedback about the introduction of the same VFR code that is already used in several European countries.
