New record set in German airspace

Flights controlled by DFS in 2007 reach the three-million mark
Today the air traffic controllers of DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung have set a new record. At 12:03 hrs, a Lufthansa Airbus A321 with flight number LH 3842 was cleared for take-off from Frankfurt with destination Rome, making it the three-millionth flight controlled by DFS in 2007. Shortly after take-off it established contact with the radar control centre in Langen, near Frankfurt.

Traffic volume in Germany has doubled since 1990, and this year the total number of flights will clearly exceed the three-million mark. This means that German airspace has the highest traffic volume in Europe. The number of aircraft movements has risen continually over the past few decades. In 2006, DFS controlled 2.98 million flights. One third of this number constituted overflights, i.e. flights which passed through German airspace in Europe's core area without taking off or landing in Germany. Flights arriving in or departing from Germany accounted for more than half of the total number, while domestic flights had the smallest share (422,000).

DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,200 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate around 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than three million movements every year. With this large number of flights, Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports. DFS provides training and consultancy services around the world and develops and sells air traffic control, surveillance and navigation systems. The company's portfolio also comprises flight-relevant data, aeronautical publications and aeronautical information services. DFS has the following business units: Control Centre, Tower, Aeronautical Solutions and Aeronautical Information Management.
