Langen, 11 April 2007 Air navigation services at the AERO 2007 exhibition
DFS seeking trainee air traffic controllers The entire air transport industry is undergoing changes. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH controlled close to three million flights in 2006. And this number is growing. The International Trade Exhibition for General Aviation (AERO 2007) taking place from 19 to 22 April in Friedrichshafen is the right place to discover the world of air navigation services. At the DFS booth (514) in hall A4, visitors can watch an air traffic controller in action. On a tower simulator, an air traffic controller demonstrates how he uses up-to-date radar and flight plan data to give pilots precise instructions for take-off and landing. He ensures that every flight reaches its destination safely. Trade visitors will have the opportunity to view the new aeronautical maps and charts (ICAO chart, ICAO glider chart, Visual 500 Austria, Netherlands and Belgium) of the DFS business unit Aeronautical Solutions. This business unit recently launched the online Aviation Shop where customers can order the aeronautical information products of DFS (www.dfs-aviationshop.de). In addition, DFS will present its new AIS Portal for pre-flight information services. DFS experts will explain the traffic situation over Friedrichshafen and the rest of Germany. Visitors can watch a live radar screen and learn more about the current aircraft movements and flight routes. Those interested in the air traffic controller profession will find out more about the training. DFS will train 80 air traffic controllers in the coming year. Anyone can apply for this exciting job, and applications are welcome at all times. Entry requirements include a school-leaving certificate ("Abitur" or equivalent university-entrance qualification), a good command of English and maximum age of 24 years. Applicants undergo a multi-stage selection procedure which tests abilities such as calculating in their heads, coping with stress and working in a team. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,200 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate around 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than three million movements every year. With this large number of flights, Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports. DFS provides training and consultancy services around the world and develops and sells air traffic control, surveillance and navigation systems. The company's portfolio also comprises flight-relevant data, aeronautical publications and aeronautical information services.
