Langen, 17 July 2007 2007 is becoming a record-breaking year
Already more than 1.5 million aircraft movements in the first six months 2007 is becoming a record-breaking year. The historic record of 10,000 flights that was set on the day after the 2006 FIFA World Cup has been broken several times since June of this year. This is due to the significant increase of 4.5 per cent in air traffic in the first half of 2007. Germany thus continues to have the highest traffic volume in Europe. And in December, DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH even expects traffic to surpass the three-million mark. Between January and June 2007, DFS controllers handled a total of 1,502,000 flights, with 806,000 of these flights handled in the second quarter of the year (+3.7 per cent). Half of all flights took off for or came from countries outside Germany, while one third crossed Germany given its central location in the heart of Europe. The remainder were domestic flights. Arrivals and departures in the second quarter of 2007 Airports also benefited from the increase in air traffic. In the second quarter of 2007, Leipzig airport recorded a traffic growth of 23.8 per cent compared to the same quarter last year. Between April and June, a total of 11,340 aircraft took off and landed in Leipzig. Bremen also enjoyed significant growth. A total of 10,132 arrivals and departures meant a 17.1 per cent increase in traffic in the second quarter of 2007. Germany's busiest hub, Frankfurt Airport, noted a slight minus of 0.5 per cent compared with the same quarter last year. Munich airport, on the other hand, experienced 5.3 per cent growth. Over the same period, the Berlin airports ranked third in Germany, closely followed by Düsseldorf and Hamburg.
