Langen, 27 December 2005 Relocation of Frankfurt Approach to Langen
Move to control centre went off without a hitch On the night of 23 to 24 December 2005, the approach control unit for Frankfurt Airport was moved to the DFS control centre in Langen. This move took place without the pilots noticing any change. Now the air traffic controllers in Langen control aircraft in the terminal control area of Frankfurt Airport, an airspace covering 60 to 80 kilometres around the Airport up to an altitude of approximately 3,500 metres. All that remains at Frankfurt Airport is the control tower, which is responsible for issuing clearances such as for take-off, landing and taxiing. A large part of the German airspace is now being controlled from Langen, which has the largest radar control centre in Europe. For some time air traffic controllers there have also been handling arrivals and departures for the airports of Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart. Eighty-seven employees from Frankfurt Airport have moved to Langen. This brings the number of employees working in Langen up to 3,000, which is over half of the total number of DFS employees (5,400). DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,200 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate around 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than three million movements every year. With this large number of flights, Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports. DFS provides training and consultancy services around the world and develops and sells air traffic control, surveillance and navigation systems. The company's portfolio also comprises flight-relevant data, aeronautical publications and aeronautical information services. DFS has the following business units: Control Centre, Tower, Aeronautical Solutions and Aeronautical Information Management.
