Opening of ICISF European Office in Langen

DFS supports the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation
In February 2005, the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation Inc. (ICISF) opened a European office at DFS in Langen, near Frankfurt. The most recent significant mission of ICISF was providing assistance in the aftermath of the South Asian Tsunami. A large number of helpers, including from DFS, provided psychological support to the victims, their families and rescue workers. However, not only major disasters such as the Tsunami require emotional support. Often less spectacular events and situations in people's professional and private lives call for the assistance of psychologists and other support staff.

Since 1997, DFS has been successfully running its own Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) programme. It was set up to primarily cater for the needs of air traffic controllers who work in a particularly stressful environment. The DFS programme was established and certified in line with ICISF standards. In 2002, the head of CISM acquired a licence to train and certify other organisations. In addition, DFS has also set up a joint contingency management team together with Fraport, the owner and operator of Frankfurt Airport.

Following the mid-air collision over Lake Constance on 1 July 2002, DFS sent a team to Zürich to provide psychological assistance to the traumatised air traffic controllers of the Swiss air navigation services organisation. ICISF is a highly respected organisation around the world and has a consultative status at the United Nations.

Given the central location in Europe, the constructive cooperation in the past between DFS and ICISF and many years of experience with the DFS crisis intervention programme, the international organisation ICISF decided to set up the European office at DFS in Langen for an initial period of three years. If the work in this office runs smoothly, ICISF will keep the office in Langen. DFS provides the necessary staff and infrastructure based on a Memorandum which was recently signed. The office of the ICISF is the first point of contact for interested organisations and people in Europe, with its objective being to increase the awareness of Critical Incident Stress Management in Europe.
