New tower commissioned in Dresden

DFS invests € 6m in Dresden unit
At the ceremony to celebrate the commissioning of the new tower in Dresden, DFS CEO Dieter Kaden commended the achievement of constructing "a tower which can stand tall – a tower which Dresden and the aviation industry can all be proud of". A different tower building had originally been planned for Dresden, namely the DFS standard tower. This tower has already been built in Leipzig, Hannover and Düsseldorf. However, it transpired that the costs of building this tower in Dresden would have been too high. Therefore, a customised tower was instead planned for Dresden, which, on the one hand, meets the requirements of providing modern air navigation services and, on the other hand, takes account of the economic situation in the region.

The seventy-year-old control tower had to be replaced as it no longer met the requirements of a modern airport in respect of providing an optimal view and accommodating state-of-the-art air traffic control equipment. DFS invested approximately € 6 million in the building, which was designed by the architecture firm "Husemann-Dr. Wichmann", and in the technical equipment, which includes a modern radar system.
