GdF recognised as a trade union

DFS pulls out of legal proceedings
DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH has ended the 18-month legal dispute with the controllers’ association Gewerkschaft der Flugsicherung (GdF). It now recognises the GdF, which was founded in 2004, as a trade union with full collective bargaining powers. The company considered this move necessary in the light of recent court decisions and because higher courts now also consider small organisations of professionals, such as that of the air traffic controllers, as trade unions. At the end of 2005, DFS will therefore pull out of the legal proceedings originally initiated by DFS to assess the capability of the GdF to function as a trade union. The GdF welcomes the decision by DFS and considers it a positive step towards further collective bargaining in the future.

DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,200 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate around 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than three million movements every year. With this large number of flights, Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports.
