DFS cuts air traffic control charges in 2005

Air traffic growth in Germany in 2004 higher than average
On 1 January 2005, DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH significantly lowered its air traffic control charges by 20.2 per cent for enroute services and 28.3 per cent for terminal services. This means that a Boeing B737 flight from Hamburg to Munich, for example, will now only cost the airline € 581 in air traffic control charges instead of € 750. An Airbus A340 flight from Frankfurt to New York will now be charged € 630 instead of € 830 for flying through German airspace.

The factors which DFS uses to calculate the charges are the weight of each aircraft and the distance flown. For the year 2004, DFS expects an increase in service units of ten per cent for enroute services and five per cent for terminal services over the year 2003.

The number of aircraft movements rose significantly in 2004, with the traffic volume growing by 6.7 per cent from 2.55 million to reach 2.72 million movements. This rate of growth is clearly higher than the European average (+4.8 per cent) and represents the highest rate since 2000.

DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,200 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate around 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than three million movements every year. With this large number of flights, Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports. DFS provides training and consultancy services around the world and develops and sells air traffic control, surveillance and navigation systems. The company's portfolio also comprises flight-relevant data, aeronautical publications and aeronautical information services.
