Braunschweig/Langen, 14 June 2005 DFS and delair sign a general agreement
Joint development and marketing of a cooperative arrival and departure manager The long-term objective of the development partnership between DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH and delair Air Traffic Systems GmbH in Braunschweig lies in the application of a unique, software-based system for the optimum planning of arrivals and departures at German airports. On 1st June 2005, representatives of both companies signed a general agreement concerning the joint development and marketing of a cooperative arrival and departure manager. This agreement consolidates the products of both companies. With its product 4-D planner, DFS provides the most innovative operational arrival manager worldwide, whereas delair offers the software darts as the only departure manager in operation worldwide. Since 2003, both solutions have been part of the network project Cooperative Air Traffic Management in the scope of the third aviation research programme which is funded by the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. Today, many airports are already working at their capacity limit, so they become bottlenecks of the growing civil air traffic. Software-based systems which optimise the air traffic flow make an important contribution to coping with the increase in traffic and static physical airport resources. The software supports the controllers in their precise time-related planning and managing of the arrivals and departures. With a more precise planning and closer separation of aircraft, the runway capacity can be used optimally. Based on flight plans, radar and weather data, the optimum sequence of arrivals and departures is proposed to the tower controller, combined with corresponding departure and arrival times. The controllers are responsible for realising these proposals and for handling traffic safely. Thus, a harmonic traffic flow is achieved which entails profit for airport, airlines, passengers and also residents. Capacity increases and delays are reduced. Less holding patterns and shorter taxi times immediately before departure lead to the reduction of fuel consumption, noise and pollutant emission. "The cooperation is essential to ensuring a powerful and, above all, harmonised system environment in the field of air traffic control in Germany", comments Bernd Eitel, head of DFS Systems House. "The cooperation consolidates two well-engineered products", explains Dietmar Dippe, managing director of delair. "We are confident that we will see the cooperative arrival and departure manager operating at an airport in one-and-a-half years." About delair: The delair Air Traffic Systems GmbH was founded in 1997 by employees of the DLR (German Aerospace Research Center) at the research airport Braunschweig, with the goal to use the know-how of research and development for the realization of innovative air traffic management systems. delair mainly focuses on the optimization of processes of air traffic control, airport operators, airlines and handling agents. The delair products are applied for example at the airports Zurich and Frankfurt as well as at Lufthansa, where they lead to a significant reduction of costs and to optimized airport processes.
