Langen, 30 July 2004 New technology for air traffic controllers in Bremen - This weekend a new control room is put into operation
This weekend the air traffic controllers of the control centre in Bremen will start using a new control system for monitoring the airspace above Northern Germany. The construction of a new control room with state-of-the-art technical systems became necessary in order to increase control capacity and meet international standards concerning technical equipment. The automation of tasks which used to be performed manually, particularly the coordination with adjacent control centres, will relieve controllers of routine tasks. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH invested a total of € 50 million in the new technology and the reconstruction work. In Bremen, air traffic controllers, flight data specialists and technicians work right around the clock in multiple shift operation. All in all, a total of 430 members of staff (including 200 controllers) will work in the control centre. During a transition phase, the old control room will stay in operation to ensure smooth flight operations even in the case of unforeseeable situations. The start-up phase is scheduled to end in mid-August. The controllers and other operational and technical staff have undergone intensive training to work with the new systems. The new technology has passed several live tests. The training and all tests have now been completed so that the control room can be put into operation during the night between 30 and 31 July 2004. It may become necessary to reduce the number of flights in the airspace above Northern Germany during the first few days to give the controllers an opportunity to become familiar with the new systems. This may cause slight delays in air traffic. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH would like to apologise for any inconvenience and ask airlines and passengers affected by these delays to show understanding. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,200 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate around 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than three million movements every year. With this large number of flights, Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports. DFS provides training and consultancy services around the world and develops and sells air traffic control, surveillance and navigation systems. The company's portfolio also comprises flight-relevant data, aeronautical publications and aeronautical information services. DFS has the following business units: Control Centre, Tower, Aeronautical Solutions and Aeronautical Information Management.
