Langen, 22 January 2004 New Chairman of DFS Advisory Council
The Advisory Council of DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH today unanimously decided to appoint the State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Ralf Nagel, as its new Chairman. Mr Nagel will replace the retired Parliamentary State Secretary Lothar Ibrügger, who has chaired the Advisory Council since 1999. Dieter Kaden, Chairman and CEO of DFS, praised Mr Ibrügger as a dedicated and good friend of DFS who, since the mid 1980s, has striven to reform the air transport system in his function as Member of the German Bundestag and in other functions. Mr Kaden proposed that Ralf Nagel be appointed as the new Chairman, who would promote the interaction between DFS and its shareholder, the Federal Republic of Germany. He welcomed Mr Nagel’s willingness to perform honorary work for the Advisory Council at the same time as carrying out the demanding tasks of his office. The new Chairman expressed his intention to further endeavour to achieve an efficient and environmentally sustainable air transport system. He commented that the new EU regulations supported by Germany to implement a Single European Sky and thus harmonise air navigation services in Europe would be a key enabler of this goal. The German government would take all steps necessary to adapt the air navigation services in Germany to the changed framework conditions. Using the valuable experience and expertise of the DFS Advisory Council could help to achieve this. The DFS Advisory Council was formed to advise and support the Board of Managing Directors in important economic and air-transport-related issues as well as in other key business policies. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,200 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate around 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than three million movements every year. With this large number of flights, Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports. The company's portfolio also comprises flight-relevant data, aeronautical publications and aeronautical information services.
