Air traffic increases again in first six months

A total of 1,300,841 aircraft movements were controlled in German airspace in the first half of 2004, representing a 5.8% increase over the same period last year. Traffic development in the year 2004 was therefore more positive than in 2003, which also recorded an increase in air traffic volume (2.4%). Key factors for this upturn were the economic recovery experienced by major European airlines after the Iraq war and SARS crisis in 2003, as well as the strong emergence of low-cost carriers and EU enlargement with its related growth in air traffic.

The day with the highest traffic volume between January and June 2004 was 18 June, with 8,877 aircraft movements being controlled on this day in German airspace. Frankfurt Airport had the heaviest workload; for example, Frankfurt Tower handled 1,458 flights on 28 May. Munich Airport had its busiest day on 25 June with 1,235 flights.

The highest growth rate compared with 2003 was registered at Berlin-Schönefeld Airport, where aircraft movements increased by almost 50% to reach 26,450. Growth was also recorded at Düsseldorf (8%), Stuttgart (12%), Munich (5%) and Frankfurt (1.8%).
