Langen, 16 August 2004 60th birthday for Dieter Kaden
DFS CEO turned a public authority into an efficient company Dieter Kaden, Chairman of the Board of Managing Directors and CEO of DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, will celebrate his 60th birthday on 17 August 2004. Through a successful corporatisation eleven years ago, he turned the Federal Administration of Air Navigation Services into a modern company. Mr Kaden is the longest serving CEO of an air navigation services organisation in the world. Other organisations are also benefiting from his experience in transforming an authority into a modern company. His advice and knowledge are widely in demand. For example, the former Vice President of the United States, Al Gore, sought Mr Kaden’s advice in 1995 concerning the reorganisation of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Since spring 2004, he has been the only European member of an international group of experts, which was set up by the US General Accounting Office. The aim of this group is to use international comparative studies to promote progress in air navigation services companies in the areas of technology, organisation, modernisation and privatisation. Mr Kaden is a prominent figure in the international air navigation services scene. He was one of the founders of CANSO, the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation, and served as Chairman of this organisation for four years. A business graduate, Mr Kaden with his marketing and IT expertise has gained extensive first-hand experience in different industries over the past 40 years of his career. In 1969, he joined the market leader IBM in the growing computers’ industry to undergo comprehensive training in the area of electronic data processing. Nixdorf and Philips, where he later took a place on the management board, were further stages in his successful career. Dieter Karen is currently in the process of guiding and preparing his company, DFS, for the future liberalised market in Europe. He is married with two children. DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH is a State-owned company under private law and has 5,200 employees. DFS ensures the safe and punctual handling of flights. Staff coordinate around 10,000 aircraft movements in German airspace every day, and more than three million movements every year. With this large number of flights, Germany has the highest traffic volume in Europe. DFS operates control centres in Langen, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. In addition, DFS is represented in the Eurocontrol Centre in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and in the control towers of the 16 international German airports.
