DFS at the AERO: ″VFRiCharts″ and the new ICAO charts

Langen/Friedrichshafen, 31 March 2010.- Since 11 March, the official ICAO charts for Germany with the new airspace depiction have been on the market. The charts are available not only as individual chart sheets but also as a wall chart and as an electronic iPhone application. From 8 to 11 April, visitors to the AERO in Friedrichshafen may obtain information about aeronautical publications, pre-flight information services and flight information at stand 129 of DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH in hall 4. As a highlight, DFS will hold a draw for an iPhone and nine ICAO wall charts. At the DFS stand, you can also order all products directly from the DFS Aviation shop and save shipping costs.

iPhone application ″VFRiCharts″
The ICAO Chart at a scale of 1:500,000 and the Europe Wall Chart at a scale of 1:2,000,000 are now available as an iPhone application directly from Apple. The current aircraft position is indicated by means of a small aircraft symbol on the respective chart. The flight level, speed and direction are determined by means of GPS. As of 8 April, the application can be downloaded from Apple in the iTunes Store at a price of EUR 49.99. ″VFRiCharts″ is not approved for navigation purposes.

ICAO wall chart
For flying schools, club houses or at home: With the new ICAO wall chart of DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, pilots can see the entire airspace depiction of Germany at a glance. The chart consists of two sheets – a northern and a southern part – which can be glued together in the middle. The total size of the chart is 145.4 x 182.2 centimetres, its scale is 1:500 000.

ICAO chart Netherlands
From 2010 on, DFS in cooperation with the Dutch air navigation service provider LVNL (Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland) prepares and produces the official ICAO chart for the Netherlands. The VFR chart at a scale of 1:500 000 is based on the ″Visual 500″ charts for Germany’s neighbouring countries Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland and the Czech Republic. In addition, the requirements defined by LVNL have been incorporated. The chart of the two ANS organisations is part of the current pan-European efforts to harmonise VFR charts.

Pre-flight information
At the DFS stand, AIS officers will answer any questions in connection with flight planning. On this occasion, the DFS online services, the AIS Portal and the ″VFReBulletin″ are also presented. At www.dfs-ais.de, pilots can file flight plans and flight plan-associated messages and retrieve NOTAM briefings. By means of the ″VFReBulletin″, current NOTAM and further information for VFR flights in Germany, Austria and Switzerland can be retrieved in German and graphically displayed on charts.

A very special service will be offered at the DFS stand to all those who wish to file a flight plan for their return flight or who require a briefing.
