MASS RELEASE OF CHILDREN'S BALLOONS

In order to release children's balloons, you have to obtain an air traffic control clearance from the competent ATC unit according to Article 16a of the German Aviation Regulation, depending on the number of balloons and the location of the release. As a rule, you need to obtain a clearance issued in writing or by telephone for a balloon release which is
  • in the immediate vicinity (control zone) of international airports (such as Frankfurt),
  • within a radius of 15 km around regional airports (such as Augsburg),
  • within a radius of 15 km around military aerodromes,
  • of more than 500 balloons.

The following information is required with at least two weeks lead time:
  • planned period (beginning and end) and date of the release,
  • place of the release (including post code, exact address and geographic coordinates, if available,
  • number of balloons,
  • contact person in the case of questions (telephone and fax number, e-mail address).

Please use our online request form on the German page of this website or send an e-mail to: ballon@dfs.de.

To release up to 500 balloons outside the protected areas (control zones) around airports described above, a clearance is deemed issued if the following conditions are complied with:
  • the balloons are not bundled (so-called balloon clusters),
  • no combustible gas is used to fill the balloons,
  • no hard objects (wood, plastic, metal, sparklers, glow sticks, chemical lights, LEDs) are fixed inside or outside the balloons.

Please bear in mind: Certain events during which balloons are released may be considered a public event which requires official permission. Please contact the competent Ordnungsamt (municipal office for public order) to obtain further information.
