PROFILE

Our motto: Experience tomorrow’s air traffic management today.

Research & Development at DFS sees itself as a bridge between research and real-world application. With this in mind, we conduct application-oriented research in the field of air traffic management. Our main objective is to advance DFS and the entire air transport system at a national and international level and identify and promote the "right" developments in the company. Whenever changes to the human-machine system of air traffic control are required and the transfer of ideas into operational use needed, we provide impulses and implementation support to smooth the transfer of concepts and ideas, procedures, technological developments and optimisations. These impulses are driven by the push-and-pull principle. "Pull" is driven by the need for innovation on the operational side and "push" by the newest research findings and the latest technological developments. The transfer from research to operational use is one of our most important outcomes.

Our work is based on the goals contained in the European strategy paper „Flightpath 2050“. The R&D department at DFS is networked into national and international projects with the leading ATM research organisations. R&D at DFS concentrates largely on new concepts, procedures and systems, ATM simulators and simulations as well as the management of innovations.

We operate an iterative R&D phase model, which means that after each phase there is a critical review and assessment of the results with the potential users.
  • This process typically starts with the identification of a need, an idea or an interesting innovation, or a request from an internal or external customer. In an iterative manner, a concept and/or a prototype is defined, for example.
  • In the subsequent validation, a check is made if, and to what extent, the respective solution can meet the expected objectives.
  • In the end, the final result is transferred to the potential internal or external customers or decision-makers. From the earliest of phases, an almost continuous exchange takes place with the potential users.

This early assessment reduces the risks associated with introduction and contributes to the quantitative and qualitative optimisation of systems and procedures and thus to a high-performance air traffic management system.

Our portfolio is rounded off by product developments and services with strong synergies to R&D activities, especially the development of simulators and the conduct of simulations.
