THE TRAINING
Combining theory and practice – that is our policy. Training realistic air situations on the simulator is just as much part of controller training as learning the theory is. The trainees are ready to work in real life after only one year. But, of course, trainees are assisted by experienced instructors at all times during on-the-job training! DFS has its Headquarters on the DFS Campus in Langen, near Frankfurt. This campus is home to the ANS Academy, which trains upcoming air traffic controllers year for year. Training begins with a theory course lasting several months. Realistic traffic situations are integrated into this course. After about a year of theory, trainees move on to on-the-job training at a control centre or at a tower of an international airport in Germany. Over a period of one-and-a-half years, trainees become familiar with the special features of the airspace which they will control in the future. They also have the opportunity to work with the technical systems. After the initial introductory phase, they start performing all of the tasks of an air traffic controller – of course under the supervision of a qualified instructor. They coordinate flights using radar systems or through visual contact, they communicate with their colleagues in the tower or control centre and give instructions to the pilots via radiotelephony. An experienced instructor is always nearby, looking over their shoulders and giving advice and suggestions. The trainees gradually assume the entire responsibility for what they learned during their training. The last step is an examination. If they pass, they will receive a licence, which will allow them to work independently. In 2010, we have 186 trainee positions in total to fill. Training commences on the following dates: CONTROL CENTRE: 11.01.2010 01.02.2010 06.04.2010 07.06.2010 21.06.2010 16.08.2010 27.09.2010 25.10.2010 29.11.2010 TOWER: 11.01.2010 07.06.2010 16.08.2010 29.11.2010
