BASICS
Germany is located in the centre of Europe which explains why thousands of aircraft cross German airspace every day. The airways in the sky above Germany form a much denser network than, for example, the motorways. In order to safely and expeditiously handle air traffic, a high degree of coordination and planning is required; this includes with neighbouring countries. For air traffic is steadily growing world-wide: More than 2.2 billion passengers from all over the world use aircraft as a means of transport every year. There are approximately 2,100 airlines in total with fleets of almost 23,000 aircraft landing at more than 3,500 airports. These flights are controlled by approximately 160 air navigation services organisations all over the world. Only about two percent of Co2 emissions worldwide are produced by air traffic and only about 0.5 percent by air traffic in Europe.
