Benefits
The following benefits should arise from these measures by 2020:
- It will be possible to save two billion euro annually; further savings can be achieved in the long term
- A European air traffic management system will be created which, thanks to its high performance, can keep pace with the best systems in the world, even in such a busy and highly complex airspace as in the European Union
- Pollutant emission per flight that is linked to air traffic management can be significantly reduced
- All parts of the air traffic management system will have a common European basis in a single framework governing safety, capacity and performance
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions per flight, of course, benefits everyone. Particularly the users – be it passengers, cargo companies, military aviation or private aviation – will also benefit from better services at lower costs and an even higher safety level. Furthermore, the SESAR project intends to position European manufacturers of air navigation equipment as technology leaders on the global market. By reducing delays and the economic and environmental cost of air traffic, the Single European Sky will promote the mobility of people and make it easier to travel. This, in turn, will help to create more jobs in the air transport industry. All in all, the new system is not set to directly cost passengers anything. Instead, it is to prevent the costs of air travel from rising in the future.
